Managing network devices has never been more accessible. With the launch of WinBox 4 in August 2024, MikroTik rewrote the rulebook, bringing a breath of fresh air to the world of router administration. But what makes this new version so special?

A Silent Revolution WinBox, the long-standing configuration tool for MikroTik routers, has evolved well beyond its Windows-centric origins. The new version represents a significant qualitative leap, breaking down barriers between operating systems and introducing features that network administrators have long dreamed of. Anyone managing MikroTik networks knows there is no shortage of alternatives:

• WebFig: A web interface built into RouterOS that offers functionality similar to WinBox, accessible via browser without the need to install additional software.
• CLI (Command Line Interface): For advanced users, the command-line interface provides full control over router configurations via SSH or Telnet access.
• MikroTik Mobile App: Available for iOS and Android devices, this application enables configuration and monitoring of routers directly from a smartphone or tablet.
• OptiWize: Offers an integrated solution for managing MikroTik devices. With OptiWize, you can access devices via terminal or WinBox with a single click directly from the dashboard, without the need to install additional software. This approach simplifies device management, delivering a smooth and centralized user experience.

Yet WinBox holds a special place in the hearts of network administrators, thanks to its unique combination of power and simplicity.

The Changes That Make the Difference The MikroTik development team has listened to the community. WinBox 4 is not a mere cosmetic update, but a deep rethinking of the tool. Mac and Linux users can finally say goodbye to emulators: the application runs natively on all major desktop platforms. The user interface has been thoughtfully redesigned, preserving the familiarity users appreciate while adding modern elements such as dark mode — a seemingly small detail that makes a big difference during long late-night configuration sessions.

The Community Responds Like any significant change, WinBox 4 has generated mixed reactions. Many network administrators accustomed to version 3 initially showed some resistance. However, the advantages of the new version are gradually winning over even the skeptics, especially among Mac and Linux users who can finally enjoy a native experience. It is important to note, however, that WinBox 4 is currently in beta and explicitly not production-ready. Development is ongoing and the MikroTik team has been very active and receptive in collecting and implementing user feedback, as evidenced by the daily discussions in the dedicated thread on the MikroTik forum. Current assessments therefore refer to the current beta version and may be subject to change in upcoming releases.

One particularly noticeable change is the interface, which has undergone a radical transformation. This affects especially those accustomed to working quickly with the previous version, who are now forced to invest time to relocate the features needed for routine maintenance tasks. Not everyone has the time to learn a new tool, even if it is potentially better. Some of the most critical issues reported by users include:

1. The disappearance of the popup that displayed statistics for an IP simply by hovering the mouse over it.
2. The loss of the ability to set comments directly from the right-click context menu.
3. The inability to enable or disable entries from the right-click context menu.
4. The shift from configuration windows with tabs to a drop-down menu system, which makes locating settings subgroups slower and less intuitive.

Overall, despite being a work-in-progress, these small shortcomings complicate day-to-day management for many network administrators.
